Taki, Tooru

Summary

Tohru Taki is a fifteen-year-old female student at Natsume’s school, standing 160 cm tall with a birthday on May 15 and blood type O. She was initially introduced to the narrative by Nishimura, a friend of Natsume who became entranced by rumors of her beauty and maintains an obvious crush on her, even though Natsume holds the majority of Taki’s attention. Taki first appears as a shy and silent girl, but this behavior stems from a curse placed upon her by a yokai. Under the terms of this curse, the yokai will consume her last thirteen names after one year unless she survives an impossible life gamble. Despite winning the gamble, the yokai refuses to honor the agreement, leaving Taki in a precarious situation. In contrast to her initial demeanor, Taki is generally happy, extroverted, and optimistic. She possesses a peculiar taste in cuteness, exemplified by her habit of hugging Nyanko-sensei and calling him cute. Similar to Tanuma, she attempts to assist Natsume whenever possible, though her efforts are often thwarted by Natsume’s concern for keeping her and others safe from yokai involvement. Although Taki lacks the spirit energy required to see yokai on her own, she inherited the knowledge of drawing yokai circles from her grandfather. When activated, these circles grant any human within their radius the ability to perceive yokai. Since the circles do not require spirit energy to function, anyone could theoretically draw them if they knew how. However, due to the intricate complexity of the designs, Taki is presumably the only person capable of drawing them without the need for a guide.
