Summary
Kenjirou Hato is a first-year male student who joins the Genshiken club during Ogiue’s initial recruitment drive. Identifying as a fudanshi, he shares the fujoshi passion for yaoi and boy’s love manga and doujinshi. To fully immerse himself in this subculture, Hato adopted a female persona complete with a near-perfect female voice, choosing to attend Genshiken meetings exclusively as a woman while attending classes as a man. Even after his clubmates discovered his secret, he continued cross-dressing for their gatherings, which eventually led the group to arrange for former member Madarame to allow Hato to change clothes at his apartment. His convincing portrayal of a woman has earned him the attention of male students on campus, who seek out the "mysterious beauty" who appears only after classes end. Yajima initially struggled to believe that such a stunning girl could actually be male, a skepticism dispelled only when she witnessed the truth firsthand during a drunken gathering with Yoshitake and Hato at her apartment. Despite his success in passing as female, Hato remains modest, doubting that people truly find him beautiful in drag. In addition to his club activities, Hato serves as one of Ogiue’s paid assistants for her professional manga work, alongside Sue, Yoshitake, and Yajima. Leveraging his artistic talent, he contributes to the series by drawing the background imagery.
