Summary
Referred to as Number 35, Mariko is the five-year-old daughter of Kurama and is unique as the only surviving third-generation Silpelit. This specific lineage distinguishes her as a Silpelit born from one infected by another Silpelit, rather than one infected by a Diclonius. Her existence stems from an incident during an escape attempt by Number Three, who was revealed to be Nana’s sister. During this event, Kurama was infected by his vectors, becoming a carrier of the Diclonius virus, which resulted in the birth of a Silpelit daughter. In the anime adaptation, Mariko wields 33 vectors with an approximate range of 11 meters, a capacity that is significantly higher in the manga. Raised in isolation within a steel container since infancy, her only human interaction came from a scientist who acted as a foster mother via speakers and monitors. This confinement has left her with physical impairments, specifically atrophied limbs, forcing her to navigate life in a wheelchair. Despite her harsh upbringing, Mariko exhibits a relatively developed psychological state. She is extremely sadistic and homicidal, deriving immense pleasure from torturing and dismembering her victims. However, she is not inherently evil; rather, she views her actions as playful entertainment, equating the thrill of killing to a child playing with toys.
