Yoshida, Ayumi

Summary

When Shinichi Kudo was shrunk by the drug APTX 4869, he joined Ayumi Yoshida’s class at Teitan Elementary. Shortly after his arrival, Ayumi and her classmate Genta Kojima conceived a plan to investigate a mansion rumored to be haunted. They convinced Conan to accompany them, and Genta recruited Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya to join the group after Mitsuhiko voiced skepticism regarding the existence of supernatural hauntings. The supposed haunting ultimately served as a distraction for an unresolved homicide case. After the mystery was solved, the four children resolved to remain together, forming the core group that would eventually become known as the Detective Boys. Ayumi remained the only female member of the group until Haibara Ai joined them. In a case involving stolen Italian gold coins that occurred just before the group’s official formation, Conan rescued the children from Mafioso members who were also seeking the treasure. This act of heroism earned Ayumi’s deep gratitude, which quickly blossomed into a serious romantic crush. Ayumi is characterized as an innocent and naive child who occasionally displays courage and serves as the group’s cheerful spirit. She harbors an unrequited crush on Conan, which makes him uneasy. However, Ayumi mistakenly believes that Conan has feelings for Haibara, reasoning that he tries to protect her and often engages in private conversations with her. Over time, Ayumi’s friendship with Haibara strengthens, and she is permitted to use the informal nickname Ai-chan when addressing her. During investigations, Ayumi frequently contributes simple yet crucial observations that help advance and resolve cases. For example, in Kurashiki, she helped decode a message on a Momotaro container found by the Detective Boys. She deduced that the code referred to a statue at the Oohara Art Museum, determining that they needed to walk twenty-five steps away from the statue in the direction it was facing.
