Summary
Although Sanae Kochiya is human, she is a distant descendant of the god Suwako Moriya. While she serves at the Moriya Shrine much like a Shrine Maiden, her inherited powers have elevated her status to resemble that of a deity herself. As faith in her and Kanako, the shrine’s true deity, waned among people in the outside world, Kanako moved the shrine to Gensokyo, hoping that youkai would maintain their belief. During the Mountain of Faith incident, Sanae attempted to intimidate the Hakurei Shrine to establish Moriya’s dominance, unaware of the immense strength possessed by humans like Reimu and Marisa. Consequently, she was defeated by the heroine, followed shortly by the defeat of Kanako and Suwako. Since then, the shrine’s residents have reached an understanding with their neighbors and live in peace with the other inhabitants of Youkai Mountain. In Undefined Fantastic Object, her mission depends on the scenario: she may be ordered by Kanako to train her abilities by hunting youkai, or by Suwako to locate the Treasure Ship, which determines whether her secondary bullet manifests as a snake or a frog. In Touhou Hisoutensoku, Sanae chases a gigantic robot across Gensokyo, only to fall into a pit leading to a nuclear reactor operated by Utsuho Reiuji. There, she discovers that Suwako was responsible for creating the massive figure known as Hisoutensoku.
