Madara

Summary

Madara remained sealed within a shrine until Natsume accidentally freed him. Due to his prolonged entrapment in a material state, he assumed the form of a maneki neko, or lucky cat, prompting Natsume to nickname him Nyanko-sensei. In this guise, he becomes visible to ordinary people, forcing Natsume to seek permission from his guardians to keep him as a pet. As a potent spirit, Madara shields Natsume from supernatural threats and occasionally instructs him in spells, with the condition that Natsume will surrender the Book of Friends upon his death. Their relationship is marked by frequent physical altercations, often ending with Natsume punching Madara unconscious. Although he vehemently denies being a cat, he enjoys playing with cat toys. The character’s design was inspired by a lucky cat statue the creator Midorikawa received during childhood, and the anime portrays Natsume as showing greater respect toward Madara.
