Summary
Brawly serves as the Gym Leader of Dewford Town, where he oversees the Knuckle Badge. His English name incorporates the term "brawl," alluding to combat, while his Japanese name, Tōki, translates literally to "fighting spirit." As a specialist in Fighting-type Pokémon, he once trained under Bruno, a member of the Kanto Elite Four. In the anime, Brawly enjoys training his Pokémon through surfing, a method that allows his creatures to move like waves and evade attacks by constantly shifting their positions. He maintains a private island equipped with a training facility and a battlefield featuring numerous geysers. Ash Ketchum is initially defeated by Brawly for relying solely on brute force, but in their rematch, Ash’s Corphish and Treecko utilize natural forces to overcome Brawly’s Machop and Hariyama. In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Brawly also trains by surfing with his Pokémon, employing a strategy that emphasizes subtle forces over raw speed or power to turn opponents' strength against them. He prefers to withhold his Pokémon’s evolutions until actual battles. During his Gym Battle with Sapphire, his Makuhita evolved into Hariyama. Sapphire deduced that his Counter technique could be countered by multi-hit moves like Double Kick, and a misunderstanding led her to believe his Pokémon would evolve during the fight. Brawly initially joined Team Aqua in the Hoenn conflict to secure more surfing locations but abandoned them once Kyogre and Groudon began their rampage. He fought Mack during the crisis, abandoning his usual tactics for direct brutality and winning at the expense of his own team. He was last seen recovering from his injuries on the Pokémon Association’s airship, Ba.Goon.
