Mutou, Sugoroku
Seiyuu / Dub
Summary
Sugoroku Mutou is the grandfather of Yugi Mutou, having gifted him the Millennium Puzzle, which he recovered from the Pharaoh Atem’s tomb during his youth. He runs the Kame Game shop, where Yugi and his friends purchase various games, and he taught Katsuya Jonouchi how to play Duel Monsters. His name itself reflects his passion, as Sugoroku is a Japanese board game akin to Backgammon. He is revealed to be the reincarnation of Siamun Muran, the vizier and right-hand man to the Pharaoh Atem. In the original manga, Seto Kaiba targeted Sugoroku for his rare Blue Eyes White Dragon card. Kaiba stole the card and challenged Yugi to a duel, which Yugi won. Seeking revenge, Kaiba later forced Sugoroku onto the dueling stage at his KaibaLand amusement park and defeated him, shredding the Blue Eyes White Dragon. While the Toei anime merely held him hostage, the manga escalated the conflict by subjecting Sugoroku to virtual reality torture to coerce Yugi into entering the deadly Death-T tournament. Yugi ultimately defeated Kaiba, rescuing his grandfather. The Duel Monsters anime merged these events, depicting Kaiba kidnapping Sugoroku as his initial move and defeating him in a duel without further torture. Sugoroku’s situation deteriorated further when Maximillion Pegasus extracted his soul to force Yugi into Pegasus’s tournament. In the manga, Pegasus trapped Sugoroku’s soul in a video camera, whereas the Duel Monsters anime confined it within a Duel Monsters card. Yugi freed him after defeating Pegasus, and Sugoroku continued to offer guidance during Yugi’s subsequent battles. During the KaibaCorp Grand Prix in the Duel Monsters anime, Solomon Muto returned to action under an alias. In the Japanese version, he used the name "Mask of Rock," while the English dub used "Apdnarg Otum," which is "Grandpa Muto" spelled backward. He faced Joey using an ancient-themed deck featuring rock monsters but was defeated. Sugoroku also appears in episode 75 of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, where he is kidnapped by Thunder and Frost.
