Summary
Komagata Yumi served as an oiran, the highest-ranking courtesan in the Yoshiwara district, which was formerly an akasen. This prestigious background endowed her with beauty, intelligence, dignity, and refined culture, having been raised in comfort. She maintained a keen interest in Japanese social issues and harbored deep resentment toward the government’s dehumanizing stance on prostitutes, who were likened to livestock. Her profound love for Makoto Shishio, which he reciprocated, drove her to join his conspiracy aimed at overthrowing the Meiji government. Throughout her involvement, she remained deeply concerned for Shishio’s deteriorating health.
