Aozaru
Summary
Aozaru, the Azure Monkey, is the sentient spirit residing within the scabbard of the Suigūtō, also known as the Water Monkey Sword. This royal treasure of the kingdom of Kei can only be drawn by the rightful ruler, making Youko the sole individual capable of wielding the blade. The weapon itself was forged from a defeated water demon by a previous great ruler, while the scabbard was crafted from a long-tailed monkey demon. A large jewel hangs from the scabbard, possessing the power to heal whoever holds it. The Suigūtō is a formidable weapon capable of slaying demons and sages, breaking metal chains, and revealing visions of the past, future, and distant locations. The sword and scabbard must remain united; if separated, the sword’s phantasms become uncontrollable, and the scabbard’s spirit acts freely. When Youko loses the scabbard, it takes the form of Aozaru, a blue monkey who torments her by amplifying her self-doubt while the sword forces her to confront unwanted visions. After overcoming her insecurities, Youko slays the monkey and retrieves the inert scabbard. With Aozaru dead, the restriction on the sword is lifted, allowing anyone to draw it, though only Youko can wield it with true effectiveness.
