Bogard, Andy

Summary

Andy is a practitioner of Shiranui-ryuu Ninjutsu and Koppouken, a form of empty-handed ninja combat. He began training in these arts after witnessing the murder of his foster father, Jeff, with the specific goal of avenging him against Geese Howard. Although Mai Shiranui, the granddaughter of his master Hanzo Shiranui, considers herself his fiancée, Andy’s personal journey has been defined by his complex relationship with his older brother, Terry. Following Jeff’s death, Tung Fu Rue took responsibility for raising both Andy and Terry. While Terry remained in South Town, Andy traveled to Japan to train under Hanzo, where he grew up alongside Mai. During his time in Japan, Andy encountered the Muay Thai fighter Joe Higashi and challenged him to a match. Upon winning, Andy invited Joe to return to America with him to participate in the King of Fighters tournament organized by Geese. This period was marked by Andy’s growing jealousy toward Terry, who was taller, older, more experienced, and arguably a superior fighter, yet managed to achieve results without the grueling daily regimen that Andy enforced upon himself. Andy had rarely seen Terry since Jeff’s death, and these disparities fueled his insecurities. In the later stages of the tournament, Andy attempted to assassinate Geese alone. However, Geese’s overwhelming power nearly caused Andy to fall to his death. Terry intervened and saved him, a moment that finally allowed Andy to acknowledge Terry as the stronger of the two brothers. Although Andy’s emotional turmoil prevented him from advancing to the final round, he felt a sense of closure after Terry defeated Geese. Andy then returned to Japan to continue his training. When a subsequent tournament was held by Wolfgang Krauser, Andy participated but did not significantly impact the storyline. Since the fall of the First Southtown and the rise of Second Southtown, following Geese’s death, Andy has focused on training Hokutomaru in Shiranui-ryuu Ninjutsu and Koppouken. Rather than competing himself, he sends Hokutomaru in his place to test his apprentice’s progress. In Hokutomaru’s ending, Andy writes a note expressing pride in his student’s strength. He concludes by declaring that he is no longer Hokutomaru’s teacher but his rival, promising that their paths will cross again.
