Summary

Maya Ibuki serves as a First Lieutenant at NERV, where she works primarily as a computer technician alongside Ritsuko Akagi. Her primary responsibility during engagements with the Angels involves monitoring the synchronization ratios of the Eva pilots and transmitting emergency commands to the Evangelions based on instructions from Misato or Gendo. In The End of Evangelion, her implementation scene is often interpreted by fans as a revelation of her secret love for Ritsuko. During Instrumentality, Lilith, appearing in the form of Ritsuko, types "I need you" into Maya’s laptop and embraces her. Maya reverts to LCL after an ecstatic gasp of "Senpai!" Although this is the only instance alluding to her feelings for Ritsuko, its exact intention remains unclear. Despite her technical profession, Maya despises violence and frequently becomes nauseous, averting her eyes during battles. Notably, she is the only NERV officer shown refusing to fight back against JSSDF invaders in The End of Evangelion, rejecting a gun from Shigeru by stating she cannot shoot it at a human being, rather than due to a lack of skill. Much of the second half of the film depicts her with her face buried in a pink pillow under her desk. She is sometimes described as representing the audience's perspective, displaying revulsion during horrific scenes and delight in lighter moments.
