Summary
Masashi Nakajima, the husband of Ritsuko Nakajima and father of Youko Nakajima, is implied to be a salaryman. He appears solely in the Sea of Shadow arc and remains unnamed in the source novel. Depicted as strict and emotionally detached, he expects his family to be submissive to his demands. He insisted Youko attend a local high school of mediocre reputation, overriding her junior high teachers' recommendations for a more prestigious institution despite her strong academic record. His wife acquiesced to his decision despite her own reservations. During Youko's childhood, he forbade her from wearing jeans to camp, arguing that girls should not dress or act like boys, and forced her to return them even as she protested. Following Youko's disappearance into the Twelve Kingdoms, her parents react differently. While Ritsuko remains hopeful, Masashi assumes she has run away to hide a delinquent lifestyle. He becomes the target of Ritsuko's anger for his indifference to her disappearance. Masashi coldly suggests that if Youko did not run away, she is likely dead.
