Summary
Master Berthold Hawkeye served as the mentor to Roy Mustang and was the estranged father of Riza Hawkeye. A brilliant alchemist, he formulated the complex theorems required to wield flame alchemy at its most efficient level but refused to teach his secrets to his young, naive pupil, deeming them too dangerous. Riza viewed her father as a frightening figure she could not relate to and with whom she rarely interacted. Fearing his life’s work would be destroyed or fall into the wrong hands, he avoided keeping normal notes. Instead, he tattooed a large Transmutation Array containing his findings on his daughter’s back, a decision that likely further strained their already shaky relationship. As an independent alchemist, Master Hawkeye held disdain for the State Military, similar to Izumi Curtis. This attitude was evident in his flippant reaction to Roy’s enlistment during the Ishval Civil War and his choice to live in squalor rather than join the State Alchemist Program. When Roy returned to his teacher’s home to obtain the theory of Flame Alchemy to qualify as a State Alchemist, Master Hawkeye revealed that his daughter possessed the knowledge. He then succumbed to illness, coughing up blood as he died in Roy’s arms.
