Envy

Summary

Envy is a shape-shifting homunculus capable of assuming any human form and perfectly mimicking voices. While they typically operate as spies, their powers are equally effective for assassination. Though not the smartest among their kind, Envy is far from stupid and can rival Lust as a master manipulator, although their efforts are often undermined by their arrogance and volatile temper. Insulting their fragile ego easily provokes them into making critical errors. In the 2003 anime adaptation, Envy is the oldest homunculus and claims to have forgotten their original appearance. Driven by a deep hatred for humanity, they follow Dante primarily to indulge in mass killings. Unlike other homunculi, Envy has no interest in the Philosopher’s Stone or achieving humanity; their sole motivation is the destruction of humans. In the manga and 2009 anime series, Envy was the fourth homunculus created by Father. Although often referred to with masculine pronouns, Envy is genderless and can take nearly any form. Described by Lust as the most cruel and sadistic of the group, Envy displays open disdain for humans and delights in hurting, humiliating, or insulting them. They are also notably vain and short-tempered, particularly when their appearance is criticized.
