Shoryu

Summary

Although the text begins by referring to Ukon, the character profile focuses on Shoryu, a samurai born into a prestigious bloodline who studied under Zuikou as one of his most valued disciples. Sent on a voyage by the daimyo, his ship wrecked, and he washed ashore in China. There, he immersed himself in a mysterious martial art called Hakkei under the guidance of Shaolin monks. He returned to Japan under the alias Shouryuu, transformed so drastically that he felt no remorse for killing a fellow student to showcase his new abilities. Zuikou expelled him, but Shouryuu’s path diverged further as he wandered the continent seeking a new master. Rejected and labeled a heretic, he grew bitter, believing his greatness went unrecognized. He began murdering famous samurai for sport while searching for a worthy rival, earning him the reputation of a "street killer." His next intended victim was Mugen. Despite Mugen’s intensive training and superiority over most of Shouryuu’s previous opponents, victory was uncertain. The two engaged in an intense battle, knocking each other’s swords away. When Shouryuu attempted to switch to hand-to-hand combat, Mugen revealed a tanto hidden at the end of his scabbard as a trump card, killing Shouryuu. This fight highlighted the uniqueness of Mugen’s champuru kendo style, which blends elements from various martial arts. Mugen seemingly mimicked and utilized Shouryuu’s chi technique to his advantage, a skill likely acquired during their initial exchange. According to Jin, this marked the first time Mugen faced an opponent about whom he felt uncertain. Shouryuu stands alongside Kariya Kagetoki and Sara as one of the most formidable fighters in the Champloo universe. His stance and style are distinctly Shaolin, utilizing a discipline called Hakkei that relies on chi. While it is unclear if he uses chi for defense, he certainly employs it to enhance his offensive capabilities. Faster than Mugen, if not equally so, he can project chi at a distance or channel it through his sword. A single blow from his palm acts as a fatal death touch.
