Summary
Formerly a swordsman in the service of the shogunate government, Usui, known as the Blind Sword, lost his sight during a battle with Shishio Makoto. He relies on the Shingan, or Eye of Heart, a unique ability functioning as superhuman hearing that allows him to perceive heartbeats. This power enables him to detect nearby individuals and discern their emotions with a precision comparable to the sonar used by dolphins or bats. As a member of the Juppongatana, Usui entered into an arrangement with Shishio Makoto, granting him the permission to attempt an assassination whenever an opportunity arose. Saito observes that Usui’s boasts about this possibility are merely a facade to conceal his deep-seated knowledge that he is incapable of defeating Shishio. Shishio is aware of this dynamic and allows the situation to persist to manipulate Usui. Unable to defeat his superior, Usui kills weaker opponents to bolster his own ego. Cho identifies him as the second strongest fighter within the Juppongatana. In combat, Usui employs a rochin, a short spear with a weighted tip, for offense, and utilizes a tinbei, a tortoise shell, as a shield to deflect strikes and obstruct the enemy's line of sight.
