Yamato, Nadeshiko
Summary
Yamato Nadeshiko, affectionately known as "Naddy," is a twenty-four-year-old Japanese teacher at Ohananomitsu High School and Aijou Rentarou’s thirteenth girlfriend. Born on February 11th under the Aquarius sign, she presents herself as a self-proclaimed American. A staunch Americophile, Nadeshiko’s fascination with the USA stems from watching a VHS tape of American children rebelling against strict traditional customs, which contrasted sharply with her family’s rigid upbringing. After being disowned by her parents, she concealed her true Japanese identity, though Rentarou helped her realize she need not feel ashamed of rejecting those values. While she adores American food, she surprisingly does not know how to drink soda. Her attempt to mimic American culture is frequently undermined by her deep-rooted traditional Japanese upbringing. She demonstrates exceptional skill in traditional arts, including Enka singing, traditional dance, koto playing, and even swordsmanship. Despite her love for America, she cannot speak English fluently, having learned from a book riddled with mistakes. Her name carries significant meaning; Yamato is an ancient name for Japan, while Nadeshiko refers to the Japanese Dianthus. Together, they evoke the term "yamato nadeshiko," which personifies the idealized, demure, and polite Japanese woman. Her birthday, February 11th, coincides with Japan’s National Foundation Day and is also recognized as Religious Freedom Day.
