Summary
Lila, known as Anabel in the anime series, made her debut in the episodes "Talking a Good Game!" and "Second Time's the Charm!" She possesses the empathic ability to sense the emotions of living beings and communicate with them, a power she has had since childhood. While her abilities resemble those of Yellow from Pokémon Adventures, other characters view her powers not as psychic, but as a highly honed sense of empathy. Despite this distinction, she is portrayed as a Psychic-type specialist who shares a strong bond with her Pokémon, addressing them as friends when sending them out. She attempted to teach Ash and May her empathetic abilities, but the effort failed as their Pokémon received nothing from the training. When Ash and his friends first encountered her, they were surprised to discover Anabel was a girl. Upon arriving at her home, she refused to change out of her wet clothes in their presence. When Ash questioned if this was due to May being there, Anabel clarified that it was simply because she is female. In their first battle, Ash lost to Anabel, whose powerful Alakazam defeated two of Ash's Pokémon, Corphish and Tauros, in succession. During a rematch, Ash managed to defeat her by employing the same strategy used in their previous encounter. As they parted ways, Anabel was depicted as having a crush on Ash. In the manga, Anabel is established as the most powerful Frontier Brain and the leader of the group, with Raikou as her trademark Pokémon. She directs the resistance against Guile Hideout's attack on the Battle Tower but falls victim to one of his traps, allowing him to seize control of the facility. Emerald attempts to scale the Tower to stop the villain, but the automated trainer system remains active, forcing him to battle his way to the top. Emerald succeeds in reaching the summit, only to find Anabel brainwashed and under Guile Hideout's complete control. She brutally defeats Emerald in battle and attempts to kill him when he is rescued by Sapphire and Ruby. Guile Hideout then appears, threatening to kill Anabel unless he is handed over the information he demands regarding Jirachi.
