Johanna serves as the mother of Dawn and is a former champion of the Grand Festival. She first appeared in the anime episode Following A Maiden's Voyage!. Once a top-tier Pokémon Coordinator, she inspired her daughter to pursue the same career path, gifting Dawn one of her old ribbons when the latter set out on her journey. Flashbacks in Battling the Generation Gap! revealed her past as a young girl competing against her childhood rival, Lila, while The Bells are Singing! showed that she had sewn Buneary's vest. In Battling a Cute Drama!, she provided new outfits for Ash, Brock, and Dawn. Johanna met Ash and Brock in person in Strategy Begins at Home!. During a double battle alongside her daughter, she commanded Glameow and an Umbreon to secure a swift victory, proving her skills remained sharp despite her time away from the spotlight. It was discovered that she runs a Coordinator class from her home, complete with a private battlefield for instruction. Later, in Challenging a Towering Figure!, she hosted the Twinleaf Festival tournament, attending in a formal gown. She made brief cameo appearances in DP174, DP175, and DP176 watching Dawn compete in the Sinnoh Grand Festival, before appearing in the audience in person during DP177.
