Summary
Frieren served as the mage within Hero Himmel’s party, accompanying Priest Heiter and Warrior Eisen on a decade-long quest to defeat the Demon King. She was the final recruit, and while Heiter initially underestimated her mana capacity, Himmel sensed she was the most powerful mage he had ever encountered. As an elf who has lived for over a thousand years, Frieren struggles to form deep bonds with humans due to their vastly different lifespans and perceptions of time. This disconnect often manifests as laziness, given her belief that missing an event is inconsequential since she can relive it later, or as a near-sociopathic inability to grasp human emotions. She frequently fails to notice how her lack of impatience or cold remarks impact those around her, leaving her companions unable to read her thoughts or understand her feelings. Despite her immense power, Frieren has a peculiar habit of collecting rare and mundane spells, such as those for polishing bronze statues or blooming flowers. She invariably requests a grimoire as payment, even when she already knows the contents or when acquiring copies of The Great Mage Flamme’s lost grimoires that she knows are fakes. Following the deaths of Hero Himmel and Priest Heiter, Frieren resolved to learn more about humanity. She now travels with Fern, her pupil and a war refugee Heiter left in her care, on a journey to Ende, the northernmost tip of the continent where souls reside and the Demon King’s Castle once stood, with the goal of speaking to Himmel’s soul. This new path leads her through locations her former party once visited, allowing her to revisit memories and gradually comprehend their significance and her own emotions. Ironically, despite being far younger, Fern is typically the one who manages Frieren’s daily care.
