Maya
Summary
Maya is an Iriomote cat, specifically a kitten, whom the girls encounter during their class excursion to Okinawa’s Iriomote island. He displays a surprising fondness for Sakaki. Following the death of Maya’s mother, the kitten searches for Sakaki, eventually locating her and rescuing both Sakaki and Chiyo from the threats posed by Kamineko and his gang. Chiyo subsequently offers to care for Maya at her residence until Sakaki can move out and establish her own living situation. Sakaki ultimately names the kitten Maya, using it as an abbreviation for 'Yamamaya', a term familiar to Iriomote natives.
