Summary

Yuugi Mutou, born on June 4 with AB blood type, serves as the central protagonist of Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters. Initially depicted as a timid and short boy who faces teasing at school, he often finds himself isolated. This solitude shifts after his grandfather presents him with the Millennium Puzzle, promising a single wish for its completion. Upon solving it, Yuugi wishes for friends, an immediate fulfillment that also awakens the spirit within the artifact, though he remains unaware of this connection for a significant portion of the narrative. Once he learns of the spirit’s existence, Yuugi develops a deep bond with him, referring to the entity as "Mou Hitori No Boku"—The Other Me—while the spirit addresses him as "Aibou"—Partner. Yuugi acts as the vessel for the Pharaoh, assisting him in recovering his lost memories while navigating extreme challenges alongside his companions. He primarily resides with his grandfather, as his parents are frequently away on business. His mother, Ashita, appears briefly in the second season during a conflict between Yuugi and the spirit. A skilled duelist, Yuugi’s expertise stems from his grandfather’s mentorship. For most of the series, Yuugi uses his grandfather’s deck, which was first utilized to battle Seto Kaiba in episode 1. However, during the Pharaoh's Memory arc, he switches to his own deck featuring magicians, spell-casters, and machines. While filler content from the KCGP occasionally portrays him as a "Ladies' Man," it is evident from the start that he harbors feelings for his childhood friend, Anzu Mazaki. Yuugi appears as an adult in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX, first encountered by Judai Yuki before the latter’s Duel Academy entrance exam, where he gifts Judai a Winged Kuriboh. He also makes appearances in Yu-Gi-Oh! The Movie - Ultra Fusion! Bonds Over Time and Space!, a 10th Anniversary special. In this film, he teams up with Judai Yuki and Yusei Fudou to combat Paradox, fighting to preserve both Duel Monsters and the fabric of time.
