Yamato, Kansuke
Summary
Hailing from Nagano Prefecture, Inspector Yamato Kansuke serves as the direct superior to Detective Uehara Yui. His distinctive appearance features an X-shaped scar over a missing left eye and the use of a forearm crutch, both resulting from a severe snow avalanche that also permanently damaged his leg. Raised alongside Uehara in a small Nagano village, Yamato was deeply inspired by the local police officer and town hero Kai Kuroto, a figure who motivated both him and Uehara to pursue careers in law enforcement. The day before the Fuurinkazan Case, Yamato pursued a parole jumper he suspected of being involved in Kai’s mysterious death into the mountains. There, he was trapped by an avalanche that cost him his eye and leg. Believed dead for several days, he was eventually located by his school friend and fellow inspector, Morofushi "Koumei" Taka'aki, who disobeyed orders to find him. Upon recovering, Yamato returned to duty to continue investigating Kai’s death. Yamato’s demeanor stands in stark contrast to the more relaxed styles of inspectors like Megure, Yokomizo, and Yamamura; he is notably serious and hard-boiled. He frequently displays a short temper, often intimidating suspects through shouting, a trait that visibly annoys him when faced with Kogorou’s ignorance or Yamamura’s goofiness. Despite this tough exterior, he possesses softer sides that he rarely shows, including a tacit acceptance of Uehara’s affection for him. With assistance from Conan and Heiji, the case was resolved, leading to Uehara rejoining the force as his partner. Yamato shares a petty rivalry with fellow detective Koumei, often competing to solve cases first. Nevertheless, they remain close friends, with Yamato even risking his life to rescue Koumei from a burning mansion. He is also one of the few characters who recognizes Conan’s intelligence, treating the boy as an adult and equal rather than a child.
