Summary

Yui Ikari is a brilliant bioengineer who worked for Project E at Gehirn and the daughter of a prominent Seele member. She is the mother of Shinji Ikari and the wife of Gendo Ikari. In the Rebuild films, she is referred to as Ayanami Yui rather than Ikari Yui. Yui possesses one of the most powerful presences in the series. She is kind, optimistic, and motherly, with a strong faith in humanity’s worthiness of preservation. This stands in contrast to the more cynical members of the cast. She became romantically involved with Gendo Rokubungi, a man several years her senior who was the source of shady rumors, including claims that he approached her only for her talent and Seele affiliation. Despite this, Yui described him as "quite a sweet person. It's just that no one knows it." After presumably graduating, Yui married Gendo, who adopted her surname. He joined the Katsuragi Expedition as an auditor for Seele, though Yui’s activities during this period remain unknown. Upon his return, they had a child named Shinji, who would have been named Rei if female.
