Creator Niichi lit up their official X account this weekend with a celebratory sketch and a long-awaited green light: Sometimes Even Reality Is a Lie! is getting a television anime, set to air in 2027. Known in Japanese as Real mo Tama ni wa Uso wo Tsuku, the romantic comedy finally steps from web panels and tankōbon pages onto the small screen.

The series first bubbled up online in August 2018 on X and Pixiv under an earlier gaming-friendship title before landing official serialization under Kadokawa’s Kitora label in July 2020. Print fans are already near the finish line—volume 8 hit shelves in late February, and the ninth and final book is due September 16—while English readers have been following J-Novel Club’s edition since the 2022 license, now up through volume 7.

At the heart of the story is Kaoru Terazaki, an MMORPG regular who rolls a female avatar and chats daily with online pal “Nanami,” who runs a male character. Their long-planned real-life meetup flips every assumption: Nanami is a girl, Kaoru’s secret is out, and a panicked cover story pushes him into a crossdressing scheme so her parents never catch the switch. Lies built their friendship; honesty—and a lot of costume changes—might redefine it.
