During a balmy summer evening, grown fireflies begin their customary dance by the stream near the "firefly inn" and rise into the sky. But one firefly stays put, unable to fly because of wings that were malformed since birth. Helped by its companions, it succeeds in climbing a willow tree. From the top, the scenery is stunning yet risky. Well-meaning older siblings come to catch fireflies, trying to trap the one that cannot fly. Noticing the threat, a brave firefly leaps into the boy's hand, giving itself up to shield the vulnerable insect. The kind-hearted children are looking for fireflies for their younger sister, who uses a wheelchair due to a leg condition. Inside her dark room, the fireflies brighten her surroundings with their glow. That evening, a connection develops between the fireflies and the children, enabling them to talk. The sister with the disability asks, "Fireflies, come see me again." Through the kids' window, a multitude of fireflies appear, turning the night into a brilliant display reminiscent of the aurora borealis.
