Synopsis
The day before her birthday, Akane visits her aunt Chi’s shop to pick up a gift. While there, she discovers a peculiar stone slab featuring a hand-shaped indentation. Driven by curiosity, she places her hand inside, and it fits exactly. Suddenly, an odd alchemist named Hippocrates and his apprentice Pipo appear, proclaiming Akane to be the prophesied "Goddess of the Green Wind." They explain that they come from a parallel world connected to the shop’s basement, a world now facing grave peril. They require Akane’s assistance as the only one who can save their realm from destruction. Despite her hesitation, Akane agrees to accompany them on a quest to restore peace to this endangered land, setting off with her aunt into this captivating new universe.
Background
The Wonderland, known as Birthday Wonderland in Japan, the UK, and Ireland, is a 2019 film based on the 1988 children's novel Chikashitsu kara no Fushigi na Tabi (Strange Journey from the Basement). It was the last Japanese film to be released in the Heisei era.
