Synopsis
The story of Combustible takes place in 18th-century Edo and follows Owaka, a merchant's daughter, and her childhood friend Matsukichi, who have grown to share deep romantic feelings. Matsukichi was cast out by his family and now works for the city fire brigade. As Owaka's arranged marriage moves forward, her intense emotions for Matsukichi ignite a catastrophic fire that sweeps through Edo. In the chaos of the blaze, Owaka and Matsukichi unexpectedly cross paths. The drama unfolds against the expansive backdrop of historic Edo.
Background
Hi no Youjin won the Grand Prize at the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival and the 67th Noburou Oofuji Award at the 2012 Mainichi Film Awards. Winner of the Platinum Grand Prize during the 2014 Future Film Festival, held in Italy.
