From Up on Poppy Hill

Synopsis

Coquelicot Manor, a boarding house run by the Matsuzaki family, sits on a hill above a coastal town. As a member of the family, Umi Matsuzaki handles many chores around the manor, including cooking meals for the tenants. Outside the home, she attends high school where an urgent issue has arisen. With the Olympics approaching, plans are underway to tear down a cherished clubhouse to make room for a new building. Many students have united to resist the demolition, and Umi joins their efforts by helping the newspaper club spread awareness. Through this involvement, she becomes friends with Shun Kazama and starts to develop romantic feelings for him. But Shun, an orphan with hazy memories of his past, and Umi begin to find surprising links between themselves as they explore their backgrounds.

Background

In 2012 the film won the Animation of the Year award in the 35th Japan Academy Prize and in the 11th Tokyo Anime Award. In 2013 it won the Best Foreign Animation/Family Trailer during the 14th Golden Trailer Awards and tied with The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu) film for the Best Animated Feature in the 12th Utah Film Critics Association.
