Synopsis
At 14 years old, high school student Naru Sekiya struggles to live up to the image of perfect princesses and the ideal girl she sees in her peers. While her childhood friend Yaya Sasame is absorbed in her school rock band and another friend, Tami Nishimikado, is active on the student council, Naru yearns for the courage to step out of her comfort zone and transform her timid nature. On a moonlit evening, Naru encounters what she thinks is a charming fairy perched on a torii gate. To her surprise, the following day reveals that the "fairy" is actually a transfer student from America named Hana N. Fountainstand. Eager to reconnect with Naru, Hana convinces her to join in establishing a club for yosakoi, a lively traditional Japanese dance that has fascinated her since childhood. Though initially intimidated by Hana’s energy and the prospect of dancing publicly, Naru slowly finds herself captivated by yosakoi and inspired to support her new friend’s aspirations. As a young woman’s journey is often led by the winds of fate, Naru embarks on a path of growth and self-discovery.
Background
A companion mobile application for Hanayamata was released by BOND & PARTNERS INC. on May 28, 2014, prior to the TV airing of the show. The application features the ability to play the sounds of naruko inspired by the main cast of characters. The series was released on Blu-ray and DVD by Sentai Filmworks on January 19, 2016.
