Patema Inverted: Beginning of the Day

Synopsis

This is the online release of the movie's prologue, depicting the very first day of the entire narrative. A world that constantly defies what you anticipate. In a dark, cramped subterranean realm filled with endless tunnels and shafts, inhabitants wear protective suits while living simple yet joyful lives. Patema, the princess of this underground society, ventures out to explore as she always does, driven by her curiosity about the unknown depths of the world. Her preferred destination is the "danger zone," a place forbidden by the community's "rule." Though her caretaker Jii frequently scolds her, she cannot suppress her fascination with the reason behind that rule, since no one will tell her what the "danger" actually is. When she draws near the hidden "secret," the tale begins.

Background

Sakasama no Patema: Beginning of the Day is a series of short prologue episodes. While a full theater release titled Sakasama no Patema was supposed to follow suit in fall, the movie was postponed and premiered over a year later. The four unaltered Beginning of the Day episodes comprise the first 20 minutes of the movie. The first episode premiered at a screening competition and was thereafter published to the GyaO! and Niconico Japanese video streaming services.
