Synopsis
In "Patema Inverted," Patema is a spirited girl from an underground society connected by a labyrinthine tunnel system. She frequently faces disapproval due to her exploratory nature and royal status. Her curiosity is piqued by a friend’s unexplained disappearance, so one day Patema enters the forbidden area and falls into a deep pit after encountering an odd creature. She finds herself in an inverted world above ground, where everything seems to fall upwards towards the sky. Patema is saved by Age, a skeptical youth from the oppressive state of Aiga. Despite Aiga’s teachings that individuals like Patema are sinful "Inverts" destined to be "swallowed by the sky," Age defies this indoctrination and decides to safeguard his newfound companion. As these two inquisitive teens unite, they embark on a journey across their separate yet interconnected worlds, determined to unravel the secrets of their shared past and promote coexistence in this touching story.
Background
Sakasema no Patema was shown at selected countries like the UK while Cinedigm handled the Blu-ray and DVD releases for North America. Patema Inverted won the Audience Award and the Judges Award during the 2013 Scotland Loves Anime. It was also nominated for Best Animated Feature Film during the 7th Asia Pacific Screen Awards.
