Synopsis
Set in the mid-1800s, Tree in the Sun follows a young doctor trained in Western medicine and a samurai who upholds traditional values. The story is inspired by real historical figures, especially the doctor Ryoan—the great-grandfather of author Osamu Tezuka. In 1855, during the Ansei era, two young men meet in the Koishigawa district of Edo: Manjiro Ibutani and Ryoan Tezuka. Ibutani is a low-ranking samurai recognized for his exceptional swordsmanship and a blunt sense of justice. Tezuka, on the other hand, is easygoing and interested in women, though he also harbors a serious ambition to become a doctor. Amid the turmoil of the closing years of the Tokugawa Shogunate (1600–1868), these two very different individuals undergo their coming-of-age journey.
