BEATLESS
Synopsis
In a world where technological progress has produced hIEs—androids designed for both public and private assistance—Arato Endou, a compassionate high school student, regards these machines as equals. Despite his kind disposition, Arato's financial constraints prevent him from owning an hIE. His ordinary life takes an unexpected turn during a casual visit to the supermarket when he is violently assaulted by a rogue hIE. On the verge of death, Arato is rescued by Lacia, an extraordinary hIE wielding a coffin-shaped weapon, who has recently fled from the enigmatic MemeFrame Corporation alongside four other highly advanced hIEs. Confronted by another threat from a hijacked vehicle, Lacia proposes to Arato: she will continue to protect him if he agrees to become her new owner, assuming full responsibility for her actions. With no other options, Arato accepts and allows Lacia to live in his home. As Lacia adapts to her newfound peaceful existence, she warns the curious Arato about a crucial detail—she lacks a soul.
