After being sealed away for a thousand years, the ancient demon lord Dongfang Qingcang finally breaks free and immediately plunges the three realms into conflict between immortals and demons. To escape his imprisonment, the demon sovereign exchanges souls with Lanhua, an immortal who struggles to control her own magical powers, and in the process inadvertently destroys her physical form. Left with no other choice, the two set off together in search of a new vessel for her. Throughout their journey, they clash and bicker through countless trials, and Lanhua gradually finds herself falling for Dongfang Qingcang—unaware that he has only ever seen her as a means to resurrect Chidi, the ancient god of war.
