Kaiju No. 8

Synopsis

Following the destruction of their hometown by colossal monsters known as kaijuu, childhood friends Kafka Hibino and Mina Ashiro vowed to join the Defense Force, the military organization dedicated to shielding Japan from these giant threats. Years later, the now 32-year-old Kafka has abandoned his dream of heroism to work cleaning up the remains of fallen kaijuu, whereas Mina has successfully become a member of the Defense Force. Kafka's life takes a dramatic turn upon meeting his new coworker, Reno Ichikawa, a determined young man who shares the dream Kafka once held of becoming a Defense Force officer. Disaster strikes when they encounter a rogue kaijuu; despite his doubts, Kafka saves Reno by revealing hidden heroic qualities, though he sustains severe injuries in the process. While recovering in the hospital, Kafka is attacked and gains the ability to transform into a humanoid form of a kaijuu, granting him the immense power of these titanic creatures. This new ability earns him the military designation "Kaijuu No. 8." Embracing his second chance at being a hero, Kafka teams up with Reno, who respects his courage, and they join forces with seasoned fighters like Mina to defend Japan from the kaijuu threat on the frontlines of the Defense Force.
