In the 74th year of the Cosmic Era, the ongoing conflict between Earth's Naturals and the space-dwelling Coordinators nears its end. After a devastating defeat, Kira Yamato takes command of the Strike Freedom Gundam and sets out on a crucial mission with the Archangel's crew to destroy the Requiem—a weapon capable of annihilating most life in the universe. Kira is joined by his close friend and rival Athrun Zala, who must fend off the fury of his former subordinate Shinn Asuka, a skilled pilot of the powerful Destiny Gundam. Shinn sees Athrun as a traitor obstructing the path to a peaceful cosmic future. Amid intense mobile suit battles deciding the galaxy's fate, the war between humans struggling to understand one another approaches its conclusion.

In C.E. 75, the fighting still rages on. Independence movements and the aggressive actions of Blue Cosmos continue to trouble the region. To bring order, a new global peacekeeping organization called COMPASS is created, with Lacus serving as its first president. As members of COMPASS, Kira and their comrades work to settle various local disputes. A newly formed nation, Foundation, then suggests a joint operation to strike a Blue Cosmos stronghold.
