Tokiyuki Houjou, an eight-year-old noble living a peaceful existence in the serene city of Kamakura, shows little interest in the future responsibilities awaiting him as the heir to the shogunate. Rather than honing his skills in swordsmanship or archery, he displays exceptional talent in evading his advisors and masterfully concealing himself. However, his idyllic life comes to a sudden halt when a brutal coup wipes out his entire clan. Overwhelmed by guilt as the sole survivor, Tokiyuki contemplates ending his own life to be reunited with his family. His path takes an unexpected turn when the enigmatic priest Yorishige Suwa thrusts him into battle, predicting that Tokiyuki will become a great hero. Forced to confront enemies, Tokiyuki finds a newfound thrill in transforming his usual games of hide-and-seek into high-stakes encounters. With renewed determination and the support of Yorishige’s allies, Tokiyuki vows to avenge his family not through combat, but by leveraging his extraordinary ability to evade danger.

In this installment

In 1333, the Kamakura shogunate had established the foundations of Japanese governance through the samurai class, but this structure collapses when the long-faithful vassal Ashikaga Takauji turns traitor and launches a rebellion. Houjou Tokiyuki, the legitimate successor to the shogunate, loses everything and is plunged into despair. The Shinto priest Suwa Yorishige takes his hand, and together they flee from the burning Kamakura. After escaping, Tokiyuki reaches Suwa's domain, where he finds allies he can rely on to gather strength and reclaim Kamakura for himself. He navigates the upheaval of this turbulent era by running away and staying alive—the exact opposite of the samurai ideal of fighting to the death. In this age of chaos filled with legendary warriors, Tokiyuki's game of tag to win back the throne is about to begin.
