Synopsis

Raised in a traveling theater troupe in fourteenth-century Japan, twelve-year-old Oniyasha has spent his whole life acting and dancing—yet he cannot grasp the meaning behind it all. Why must he place his left foot in one spot rather than the other? What separates a good performance from a bad one? Why do people dance at all? Every movement feels meaningless and arbitrary, until an unexpected meeting in a dilapidated hut sets him on a path that will transform the art form and leave a lasting mark on Japanese culture. This fictionalized origin story of Zeami Motokiyo (Oniyasha), the founder of Noh theater—the world's oldest surviving theatrical tradition—follows a young artist's coming-of-age journey, painting a vivid portrait of a man who was far ahead of his time in one of Japan's most culturally and socially vibrant eras.
