Chiikawa Film Unveils Island Cast, Stars Cheer July 24 Debut

Japan’s biggest cute-character movie of the summer is almost in theaters. With Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island set to open nationwide on July 24, the camp unveiled two new island residents and a wave of cast comments just days before release.

Momoka Terasawa will voice Hitoha and Sayumi Suzushiro will voice Futaba—inseparable islanders who help Chiikawa and friends find their way after a too-good-to-be-true invitation lures the crew to a mysterious mermaid island. The pair join a stacked lineup that already includes Haruka Aoki (Chiikawa), Makoto Tanaka (Hachiware), Ari Ozawa (Usagi), Tsuguo Mogami (Shimajirō), and Minori Suzuki (Siren), with Toho handling distribution.

Lead voices used the rollout to hype a bigger, more emotional adventure than the TV series. Aoki called the story a major growth moment for the core cast; Tanaka spotlighted opening theme Kutsuzure, which he performed after hard practice; Ozawa praised how director Kei Oikawa and original creator Nagano keep the manga’s tone while packing theatrical spectacle. Animation is by Cypic.

Theaters are also leaning into the moment: AR photo frames with the characters roll out from opening day, Fuji TV morning shows have been hosting daily live appearances, and the film is set for simultaneous IMAX screenings. For a franchise built on tiny feelings and huge merch energy, the first big-screen trip looks ready to own the holiday weekend.
