Kamogawa, Genji

Summary

Born on January 15, 1917, in Tokyo, Japan, Kamogawa Genji is a central deuteragonist in Hajime no Ippo whose influence on the narrative rivals that of Takamura Mamoru and Miyata Ichirou. All three figures serve as pivotal inspirations for Makunouchi Ippo to persist in his boxing career. A retired boxer who competed as a prizefighter in Japan shortly after the end of the Second World War, Kamogawa is known for his national pride during the American occupation, notably refusing food handouts. He exchanged blows multiple times with former prizefighter Nekota Ginpachi and shared a friendship with fellow competitor and future trainer Hama Dankichi. Kamogawa founded the Kamogawa Boxing Gym, where he serves as the head coach and trainer. In his role, he is strict and maintains high expectations for his trainees, yet he genuinely cares for their well-being, albeit in a reserved and aloof manner. He forges strong bonds with his fighters through trust and spirit, utilizing his sharp sense for boxing and extensive knowledge to devise strategies that often turn matches in their favor. He is particularly proud of his two most prominent boxers, Takamura Mamoru and Makunouchi Ippo. His history with the gym includes training Yagi-chan, who became its manager, as well as the then-OPBF Featherweight champion Miyata-san and the budding counter specialist Miyata Ichirou. He also discovered Takamura Mamoru by chance and convinced him to enter the sport. Takamura subsequently scouted Aoki Masaru, Kimura Tatsuya, and Makunouchi Ippo to the gym. Although he declined to train Itagaki Manabu, Kamogawa serves as a cornerman for him and is just as surprised by Itagaki’s speed and skills as he is by his own students' talents. In his prime, Kamogawa competed in the Bantamweight division, which had a weight limit of 115 to 118 pounds, employing a Brawler and In-Fighter style. He was known for his use of feints and Tekken, also known as The Iron Fist, which involved bone-breaking body blows. He officially retired from competition in 1947.
