Belgium

Summary

Known by the names Koninkrijk België and Royaume de Belgique, or simply the Kingdom of Belgium, this character hails from Brussels and speaks both Dutch and French. Her birthday and physical stats like height and age remain unknown, though her national flower is the Red Poppy. She is portrayed as the cheerful sibling of the Netherlands and Luxembourg, typically depicted with green eyes and wavy, shoulder-length blonde hair, although some official art shows her with light brown locks. She made a silent appearance in the first episode of the anime and the unaired special, “The Diary of the Awesome Me, Part 2.” Historically, she once cohabited with her brother, the Netherlands, and a young Romano in Spain’s house. Their relationship soured when the Netherlands declared independence; Belgium sided with Spain and fought against her brother. Although the Netherlands attempted reconciliation by proposing a united country, the plan failed due to their stark personality differences—Belgium is mature and friendly, while he is cool and tough—and they remained separate. Their bond remains awkward and strained to this day. Romano harbored a childhood crush on the older Belgium. He was too shy to confess or kiss her when she asked him to, a request she made only out of pity. Belgium is generally kind, diligent, and good-natured, yet she is often pushed around by her siblings and can be meddlesome. She has a passion for gourmet food and snacks and is terrifying when angry. Despite her pretty features, she dresses simply and is often overlooked or forgotten because she is overshadowed by more prominent nations. She serves as a tsukkomi character, speaks in a Shiga dialect, and has been variously referred to by fans as “Alice” due to Hidekaz Himaruya’s consideration of names like Anri, Emma, Laura, and Manon, none of which have been officially finalized.
