Jokaku
Summary
Jokaku served as the immediate predecessor to Youko Nakajima as the ruler of Kei. Following her death, she was posthumously honored with the title You-ou, the Prophet-King. Unable to manage the court, Jokaku retreated into the Inner Palace and ceased active governance. She grew vulnerable to the flattery and lavish gifts offered by her advisors, such as a village of elderly residents and children. She frequently visited this village to teach embroidery and poetry, reflecting the idealized life she desired. This gift was orchestrated by Gahou, whom Jokaku rewarded by appointing him as the governor of Wa. Her sister, Joei, encouraged this withdrawal and exploited Jokaku’s affection for her to accumulate political power within the court. In an effort to mend the strained relationship between Keiki and Jokaku, the Genkun Gyokuyo on Mount Hou arranged for Keiki to assist Taiki, hoping this would help him become more sensitive to the feelings of others. However, Keiki’s awkward kindness instead caused Jokaku to fall in love with him. Consumed by jealousy, she banned all women from the palace and eventually the entire country, ensuring no one else could exploit Keiki’s kindness.
