Summary
Sayo Mutou, known to her followers as Lady Magdalia, is the younger sister of Amakusa Shougo. She holds a revered position as a holy mother to their community and serves as an educator for the children under their care. Suffering from consumption since childhood, a condition she likely inherited from her mother, she remains a steadfast presence despite her frailty. She is frequently accompanied by Shozo, a childhood friend whom she and Shougo rescued from persecution. As a devout Christian, Magdalia adheres strictly to the beliefs and actions of her brother, a stance that frequently brings her into conflict with the more cynical Sagara Sanosuke. Her most cherished item is her mother’s holy medallion, which was lost and later recovered for her by Sanosuke. Through this act, she comes to respect him, expressing regret that she had not encountered someone like him sooner, which might have allowed her to open her heart to those outside her faith. Tragedy strikes when she is shot while protecting the Dutch consul, the only person capable of saving her townspeople. Refusing medical treatment in the belief that her sacrifice will ensure the safety of her people, she passes away in Sanosuke’s arms. Before dying, she reveals her true name to him. Following her death, Shougo vows to realize her dream of creating a world defined by equality and peace.
