Summary
Kazuma Kuwabara’s older sister is a formidable figure who, like her younger sibling, possesses a high level of Reiki sensitivity and immense physical strength. Early in the manga, Shizuru even exhibits a stronger sixth sense than Kazuma. At seventeen, she is dedicated to ensuring Kazuma matures and pursues an education to secure a stable future. An aspiring beautician, she gives Keiko a new haircut following the incident where Keiko rescues Yusuke from a burning house. Shizuru is also a chain smoker and plays a significant role during the Dark Tournament, where she falls for Sakyo, the leader of Team Toguro, the rival of Team Urameshi. Although Sakyo saves her life twice, she remains unaware of his true identity until the story’s conclusion. She is also aware of Yukina’s relationship to Hiei, having viewed a video tape that revealed Yukina is Hiei’s sister, a detail only she, Botan, and Yusuke witnessed. Much like Keiko, Shizuru is outspoken and unafraid to use physical force when necessary, notably shouting at Toguro during the Dark Tournament. Her presence extends into the Chapter Black and Three Kings sagas. During the latter, frustrated by Kazuma’s reckless behavior, she disciplines him strictly to prioritize his studies, warning that his fighting lifestyle will only lead to ruin. In the anime adaptation, Shizuru is introduced later during the Yukina arc rather than immediately after Keiko’s haircut. She assumes a larger role in the series, largely due to the expanded romance with Sakyo and her taking on Atsuko’s narrative function.
