Summary

At thirty-eight years old, Hasegawa Taizou is a man whose life has taken a sharp turn from the rigid discipline of his past. Born on June 13 under the Gemini sign, he stands 179 cm tall and weighs 67 kg. Once an official serving the Bakufu, his career ended in disgrace following an incident with the Amanto dignitary Prince Hata. After being tasked with protecting Hata, Hasegawa fled his post, leading his superiors to demand he commit seppuku to restore honor. Instead, he chose flight, a decision that shattered his belief that humans should appease the Amanto. This shift in perspective, catalyzed by his encounter with Gintoki, eventually led him to punch Hata, resulting in his termination. Since leaving government service, Hasegawa has drifted into a cycle of unemployment, earning the derogatory nickname "Madao," a contraction of "marude damena ossan" meaning "totally useless middle-aged man." He holds a steady stream of part-time gigs, including driving a taxi and managing a supermarket for a friend, yet he is fired frequently, often due to the unfavorable impression his goatee and sunglasses create. He refuses to discard the sunglasses, viewing them as his last tangible connection to a successful past. Although he briefly swapped them for modest half-moon spectacles, he returned to the dark lenses after deciding to live his life to the fullest. Despite his struggles, he maintains a friendly rapport with Gintoki, with whom he spends much of his leisure time gambling, particularly on pachinko, though he rarely wins. His personal life is strained by his financial instability; he is currently estranged from his wife, Hatsu, due to his jobless existence, though they remain in contact. In a moment of vulnerability revealed in episode 52, it was noted that his stress levels are high enough to cause him to lose control of his bladder.
