Mazaki, Anzu
Summary
Anzu Mazaki is a sixteen-year-old girl born on August 18, with O-type blood, standing 165 cm tall and weighing 47 kg. She favors ramen while disliking grated yam. As Yugi Mutou’s childhood friend, she eventually bonds with Katsuya Jonouchi and Hiroto Honda, despite initial reservations. In the first anime series, Miho Nosaka is also part of her friend group. While she rarely participates in games with Yugi and his friends, she once defeated Jonouchi. In the manga, particularly early on, she displays a spunky, tomboyish demeanor, once scaring Honda and Jonouchi away after they bullied Yugi. Generally kind-hearted, strong-willed, and supportive, she serves as a mother or sister figure to the boys in the Duel Monsters anime, acting as a cheerleader during duels. Although she is more feminine and polite than her earlier self, she has proven her dueling skills and keeps pace with the action. Fans of the English anime recognize her for her "friendship speeches." Athletic and working multiple jobs to fund dance school in New York City, Anzu initially works at "Burger World." In the manga’s fourth volume, she is fired for punching a customer who assaulted her. She later finds employment at KaibaCorp, where she meets her friends at KaibaLand. The Toei anime shows her, Honda, and Miho working at Burger World, with Honda and Miho supporting her financially. After the restaurant closes, Honda and Miho move to a beef bowl shop. In the 1999 film, she works at the "Duel Monsters Center," a parlor where she already knows Shōgo Aoyama, a regular and Yugi’s neighbor. Creator Kazuki Takahashi described the dynamic between Anzu and the two Yugis as a "love triangle," noting that they act carefully around each other, preventing them from admitting their feelings. Her first deck is a Fairy Deck focusing on Light-Attribute Fairy monsters and enhancement spells. Her second deck is a Spellcaster Deck, featuring cards like Fire Sorcerer, Maha Vailo, and the Dark Magician Girl, reflecting her one-sided love for both Yugis. She duels once in the manga and three times in the second anime series. During the Virtual World arc, she uses a deck mirroring Yugi’s Spellcaster deck but with a more feminine aesthetic.
