Smahlt, Kurda
Summary
Kurda Smahlt was a vampire general who first appeared in the fourth book. During the Trials of Death, he killed Gavner Purl and dispatched the Vampaneze to retrieve Darren. In Vampire Prince, Kurda claimed he sought to bring peace between the two clans. He led a group of Vampaneze to Vampire Mountain, leading Darren to believe he intended to hand over the Stone of Blood upon becoming a Prince. In reality, Kurda aimed to unite the clans using these Vampaneze, who had already agreed that killing was wrong. Just before Kurda could become a Vampire Prince, Darren arrived and accused him of being a traitor. Subsequently, Kurda was dropped onto stakes in the Hall of Death. In the second book, Harkat was introduced as Lefty due to a limp in his left leg. At Vampire Mountain, he revealed his true name and his ability to speak. He deliberately went out of his way to protect Darren. In The Lake of Souls, it was revealed that Harkat was formerly Kurda Smahlt, according to Mr. Tiny. Mr. Tiny reconstructed Harkat from Kurda’s remains and sent him back in time to prevent Darren from dying in his fight with the bear while traveling to Vampire Mountain, or from the two boars during his Trials of Initiation. The name Harkat Mulds is actually an anagram of Kurda Smahlt, as shown by the teeth of the panther in The Lake of Souls. Additionally, Harkat bore three identical scars that matched those of Kurda.
