Summary
Kanzeon Bosatsu is one of the Five Great Bodhisattvas residing in heaven, traditionally associated with mercy and compassion. However, she presents a stark contrast to this pious image, depicted as a vulgar, sexually explicit hermaphrodite who frequently exposes her breasts. It was she who commanded the Sanzou Ikkou to travel west. While it may appear that she delights in subjecting Sanzou and his companions to various trials, her true motivation stems from five hundred years ago, when she began watching over Goku and the others with great care and devotion. In the Gaiden, she demonstrates immense power, capable of knocking out Goku after he transformed into the Seiten Taisei, leading to speculation that she may be the strongest character. Her gender presentation varies by medium; the manga portrays her as a hermaphrodite, whereas the anime depicts her solely as female. In Saiyuki Gaiden, she is identified as Konzen's aunt and is the one responsible for bringing Goku to heaven.
